About

DJ Formation, Producer/Promoter

Hosie Williams, aka, DJ formation is a Chicago Native who discovered his love for music as a young boy. His fascination for music grew as he was exposed to all genres of music. During the 70s, Hosie would jump for joy and run and sit in front of the family’s Zenith Hi-Fi when his mother would buy the latest James Brown, Earth Wind and Fire, and Ohio Players albums or 45s. Moving into the early 80s, Hosie began to embark on another passion, which was dancing. Hosie would wake up every Saturday morning and watch Soul Train. He was captivated by the lockers, break dancers, and those doing the electric boog-a-loo often mimicking and mastering their moves with his own style and creativeness which lead to him being known as one of Chicago’s top street dancers. Also known as Mr. Wiggles at the time, Hosie danced with such groups as Tide Waves, Crash Crew, the Electric Boys, K-Town Breakers, and the L-Town Poppers, participating in and winning talent shows all across the city.

During the mid to late 80s something amazing happened. Hosie was invited by his friends Joe and Mike to go to a club on Chicago’s West Side, called The Divinci Manner. Their he heard a DJ play by the name of Farley Funkin Keith now known as Farley Jack Master Funk. At the club all Hosie would do was try to get as close as he possibly could to watch the creative styles of the DJ which further fueled him leaving him in awe and yearning for more. The style of music that was being played was house, and a new house head was born. The following week Hosie attended the Muzic Box featuring Ron Hardy. Then it was Lil Louis at Medusa’s and on and on and on following great Djs across the city. Hosie’s appreciation for music grew more and more which led him to go out and purchase his first DJ setup, which included two technique turntables, a Gemini mixer and all the latest house tracks from Import and Loop Records. Using whatever music at their disposal Hosie and his friend Mike would spend countless hours practicing and refining their skills, which gave birth to “DJ Formation”. Mike would call Hosie “Formation” because of his ability to formulate structure while blending and mixing records together. They did local house parties which landed DJ Formation an opportunity for an opening spot as a guest DJ at a local night club on the Westside called The Factory.

In 1992 tragedy shook DJ Formation to the core when his friend and turntable brother Mike Birden was killed in an accident. This tragedy pushed him into a state of pause.

In 2008 while attending the Chicago African Festival of Arts DJ Formation had the privilege of meeting Fathom DJ at her booth where they had a discussion about past and future music and house music in the city of Chicago. Not long afterwards, the Renaissance Society was born, along with Robin Mack Thompson, Keith MacIntosh and Patrick Jones. The Renaissance Society was a successful movement which lasted until the summer of 2011. Formation’s involvement in The Renaissance Movement included promoting, investments, and sergeant of arms. DJ Formation also had the opportunity to open up as and fill in at the Juicy Juice Bar which was Fathom DJ’s residence.

In recent years DJ Formation has also worked with Denise Hope and DJ Pap as a guest on a biweekly Chicago house radio show. DJ Formation also has a weekly resident at a Chicago west side lounge on Sunday nights called the Brass Monkey where he plays soulful house and many other genres of music with a propensity for house music. DJ Formation has also done guest appearances on Sweat Zone Internet Radio Show. In 2011 DJ Formation started Soul Gravitation Live Stream Radio Show on U-Stream where you can hear biweekly shows. Currently, you can also hear DJ Formation each week doing his Soul Loft 518 session on Cyberjamz.com. DJ Formation is also working in the studio producing and he has just finished a track called Soul Gravitation Instrumental assisted by DJ Knoxx. DJ Formation has done a host of private and corporate events at some of the most lavish places in Chicago included but not limited to Marina City, Willis Towers, and Chicago Art Society.
